Roy Waring Phares, 72, of Poplar Bluff, MO, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Phares was born September 23, 1940 in Bessie, OK. He served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years. After retiring from the Navy, he worked at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center while attending Southeast Missouri State University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. After graduating, he taught at Twin Rivers High School for nearly 20 years. On May 26, 1973 he married Norma McCray and she survives. Other survivors include four children Diane Phares and Matthew Phares both of Springfield, MO, Babette Gates of Pleasant Grove, AL, and Dorsey Gates of Hawaii; three brothers, Graham Phares, Ray Whiting, and Michael Fawks; one sister, Debbie Castleberry; five grandchildren, Jacob Phares, Isaac Phares, Isabella Phares, Alana Gates and Alyssa Gates. Mr. Phares was preceded in death by a sister Cory Stewart and a brother Robert Weber. Visitation will be Friday at 6 PM at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk. The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 AM in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Thomas Carter officiating. Burial will be at Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
